It’s that time of year again – and no, we’re not talking about anything pumpkin spice. As the calendar inches towards November, you’re going to see something sprouting up on the faces of your favorite men. November is the month we’ve come to affectionately refer to as Movember, and while you might think it’s an occasion meant to honor the mighty moustache, there’s actually a much more significant meaning behind the month where the upper lips of men everywhere become a little furrier.

WHAT IS MOVEMBER?

At first glance, the word “Movember” seems like a tongue in cheek way to pay homage to manly moustaches everywhere during the month of November. While this may be the case, at least partially, there’s another reason that we support Movember, and it has everything to do with men’s health.

The exact origins of Movember can be placed anywhere between 1999 and 2004, however any way you look at it, there has been a collective movement for over a decade for men around the world to grow out their moustaches during the month of November to help raise awareness of men’s health issues.

Over the years, Movember has become an event that is recognized around the world. The goal being to help bring awareness to the fact that men have a shorter average life expectancy than women, and that many men die every year of health issues that could have been treated, or even prevented, with proper medical screening and care. While the goal is to raise awareness of all men’s health issues, special attention is paid to building awareness of prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men’s mental health.

In case you were wondering, Movember isn’t just another “Hallmark holiday”. There’s actually a Movember Foundation that runs a website and charity event, with the goal of changing the landscape of men’s health by encouraging men to get involved, make commitments to their health, get regular screenings, be aware of the family history of cancer, learn the risk of mental health disorders, and adopt an overall healthier lifestyle.

THE MOUSTACHE – THE ICONIC SYMBOL OF MOVEMBER

The moustache is considered the “ribbon” for men’s health. This why during Movember, you’ll not only notice more men sporting a moustache, but you’ll also likely spot the symbol at events focused on men’s health. If you want to join in the festivities, there are a few rules you need to follow. These rules, coming straight from the Movember Foundation themselves, are as follows.

• Rule Number One: Start by registering at movember.com, but make sure you have a freshly shaven face at the start of Movember on November 1st.
• Rule Number Two: For the entire month of November, every “Mo Bro” participant must grow, and groom, their moustache.
• Rule Number Three: Moustaches only. No beards, no goatees, not halfhearted attempts at a growing a moustache. Basically, it’s grow big or go home.
• Rule Number Four: Have no shame in your game. Use your moustache to spark conversations around the topic of men’s health.
• Rule Number Five: Always, and we mean always, conduct yourself as a gentleman. The Movember stache has no place on the face of a jerk.
